Power plants take a big step toward carbon reduction—formaldehyde synthesis lends a helping hand.
Shanghai LANKONG is actively participating in Shanghai’s first industrial-scale project for the hydrogenation of pure carbon dioxide to produce methanol, providing technical support and equipment assurance for the smooth implementation of the project.

On April 23, 2024, Huisheng Engineering signed an EPC contract with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Third Power Generation Co., Ltd. for a demonstration project involving the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to synthesize methanol on a scale of tens of thousands of tons.

The 10,000-ton-scale demonstration project for hydrogenating carbon dioxide to synthesize methanol is a key supporting project of the “Joint Laboratory for Carbon Neutrality,” jointly established by Shenergy Co., Ltd. and East China University of Science and Technology. It is also Shanghai’s first industrial-scale demonstration project for producing methanol via hydrogenation of pure carbon dioxide. This project will pave the way for the power industry to achieve deep carbon reduction while simultaneously developing methanol—a product with multiple properties including serving as a chemical feedstock, fuel, hydrogen carrier, and energy storage medium—through a replicable and sustainable technological approach.

The turnkey containerized substation provided by Shanghai LANKONG for the 10,000-ton-level carbon dioxide hydrogenation-to-methanol demonstration project is a compact substation that integrates multiple components—including transformers, switchgear, power cables, and control systems—into a single unit. It offers advantages such as stable power supply, space and cost savings, enhanced power supply reliability, ease of maintenance and management, and compliance with environmental protection requirements. This type of substation is widely used in urban rail transit systems, large-scale buildings, oil and mining operations, major industrial and mining enterprises, construction sites, and other similar venues.
The complete construction and commissioning of the 10,000-ton-scale demonstration project for hydrogenating carbon dioxide to synthesize methanol will promote the “organic” integration between the power industry and the chemical industry, help build a green and low-carbon energy security system, and achieve cross-sector carbon neutrality. This project will deliver significant social benefits and serve as an important economic model.
